Peru Ecocamp

What follows is built around a base camp, which is what separates it from a point-to-point trek. One night in a colonial house in San Blas first, because Cusco's altitude is not negotiable and the first day is for letting it settle. Then down through terraced valleys into cloud forest, stopping at Kuillarumiyoc or Tarahuasi on the way, to the Eco Camp in the Mollepata valley. Three nights in a dome there, with canvas between you and the cold, and the walking radiates outward each morning rather than moving you along. Day three climbs the Apurímac valley toward Apu Tilca, where the terraces step down slopes that look like they should not hold them. Day four is a genuine fork: the hard climb to the Salkantay pass, or the gentler line past the aqueduct above the Río Blanco valley to Humantay Lake. You choose at breakfast, and the mountain gets a say.

Then the trip moves. Moray's concentric terraces on the way out of the valley, a night at Las Qolqas above Ollantaytambo, and on the sixth morning the train to Kilometer 104, where the one-day Inca Trail begins. That stretch does what the four-day version does at its end, arriving at the citadel on foot and from above rather than stepping off a bus at the gate, and it asks a single hard day rather than four. Cloud forest casitas at Aguas Calientes that night, the citadel itself, then the train and the road back to the same house in San Blas for a farewell dinner. Eight days, one pass or one lake, and Machu Picchu earned rather than delivered.
