What follows takes the long way on purpose, and the first three days are the reason the rest works. Most itineraries reach Machu Picchu by train in ninety minutes. This one arrives on the fourth afternoon of a walk. Before any of that, the Sacred Valley does the quiet work of altitude: two nights at Las Qolqas above Ollantaytambo, a morning with a master weaver's family in Chinchero learning ancestral dyeing, a night in a heated thermal dome beside Huaypo Lake, then a stand-up paddleboard across it at breakfast. The circular terraces at Moray and the salt pans at Maras follow, and dinner is at Ani Vellutino's table, built from whatever the local markets gave up that morning. By the time the road drops to Kilometer 82 at Piscacucho, the body has had three days to come to terms with the thin air, which is the entire point of putting them first.

The trail itself runs four days and three nights, and the camps are staffed ones with hot showers, massage, and a chef, which changes what the walking costs you without changing what it asks. Day two is the hard one: the climb out of Wayllabamba to Warmiwañusqa, Dead Woman's Pass, at 4,215 meters. Day three turns gentler at Runkurakay, whose circular walls are a genuine oddity among Inca ruins. Each day carries an Andean idea rather than just a distance, from Camay at the river to yanantin-masintin on the descent from Phuyupatamarca, which is why the guiding reads as teaching rather than narration. Then the cloud forest casitas at Aguas Calientes, the citadel itself the next morning before the buses thicken, and two nights in a colonial house in San Blas at the top of its hill. Should the pass take longer than the map suggests, or Cusco's Plaza de Armas hold you past the hour you meant to leave it, the schedule was built expecting it.
