The Journey Design

Between the dark-sky basin at Lake Tekapo and the ridgelines above Lake Wakatipu, nine days of walking you pick each morning.

What follows is a walking trip with no route. Three bases, eight nights, and a menu of trails at each one, chosen over breakfast according to what the legs and the weather will allow. That is the decision everything else runs on.

Three hours inland from Christchurch the Canterbury Plains give out and the Mackenzie Basin opens — tussock, sky, and the glacial blue that gives Lake Tekapo its name. Two nights there, and three walks to divide between them: the Mt John summit circuit straight up from Lakeside Drive, the relentless staircase of Sealy Tarns, and the short willow-lined loop at Lake McGregor for an evening.

West to Wānaka for three nights, a short walk from Ardmore Street and the water. Mount Iron on the afternoon you arrive, because it is close and quick and the legs want it after the drive. Then the park itself: Rob Roy Glacier out and back through Mount Aspiring National Park, Diamond Lake and Rocky Mountain with a turnaround at whatever height suits, and Roys Peak for anyone willing to give it sixteen kilometres and most of a day.

Then Queenstown, three more nights, deliberately a few minutes outside the town's own current. Ben Lomond from the top of the gondola, Queenstown Hill through the pines to the Basket of Dreams, Mt Crichton on a quiet loop fifteen minutes out of town. Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables keep opening up as you climb, which is most of the point.

Nothing here is a through-hike. You unpack three times in nine days and walk out from the door each morning, which means a day of bad weather costs you a view rather than a schedule.

Chapter 1 · 2 Nights

Mackenzie Basin & the Dark Sky Meridian

Lakeside nights at Peppers Bluewater beneath the Southern Alps' clearest skies, tracing the Mt John summit circuit above turquoise glacial waters and the quiet shores of Lake McGregor.

Lake Tekapo

Day 01 of 09
The road from Christchurch climbs inland through the Canterbury Plains before the land opens into something altogether more spare — tussock, sky, and the particular blue of a glacial lake that gives this place its name. Three hours of that country, and you arrive.

Breakfast included

This studio-style room faces Lake Tekapo and accommodates two guests in either a king bed or two twin beds. At 236 sq ft (22 sq m), it is configured as a studio with one bathroom and a lake view. Lake Tekapo Hiking Options

Day 02 of 09
Three walks claim the day, each asking something different of your legs and your attention — a ridge climbed, steps that don't relent, a smaller lake held quietly at the end. Breakfast first, then out the door.
Scheduled TimeFlexible

Mt John Summit Circuit Track

Adventure
Mt John Summit Circuit Track

A moderate 8.4-kilometer (5.2-mile) loop starting across the road on Lakeside Drive, so there is no drive to the trailhead. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours.

The track climbs steadily through dark pine forest, then breaks onto an exposed ridge where the whole Mackenzie Basin opens out. Four hundred meters of gain brings you to the observatory on the summit, the same hilltop that anchors the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve.

Sealy Tarns Track

Adventure
Sealy Tarns Track

Nicknamed the "Stairway to Heaven," and it earns the name: roughly 2,200 cut steps packed into a 5.3-kilometer (3.3-mile) return trip, gaining 550 meters with very little respite. Moderate to advanced, and steep from the first step. Allow 3 to 4 hours.

At the top, two clear alpine tarns hold a mirror up to the jagged peaks above them. The trailhead is in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, a little over an hour's drive up the lake road from Tekapo.

Lake McGregor Loop Walk

Adventure
Lake McGregor Loop Walk

An easy, mostly flat 4.3-kilometer (2.7-mile) loop around a small, deep lake a short drive from Tekapo. Allow an hour to ninety minutes.

Willows line most of the shore, and it is the local pick for sunset. Gentle enough to work as a recovery walk on the day after one of the climbs.

Schist Ridgelines & the Wānaka Basin

Three nights at Wanaka Homestead Lodge among silver tussock and old stone, ascending Roys Peak at dawn and tracking the Rob Roy Glacier through its narrow schist-walled valley.

Transfer to Wānaka

Day 03 of 09
The road west from Tekapo trades the Mackenzie Basin's open sky for something more enclosed, more layered. Wānaka arrives quietly — a lake town that earns its reputation without announcing it. Your base for the next three nights sits a short walk from Ardmore Street and the water's edge, close enough that the evening's options feel easy rather than planned.

The Mount Iron Track

Adventure
The Mount Iron Track

A short, sharp introduction to Wānaka, close enough to town that you can walk to the trailhead. The loop runs roughly 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) with about 250 meters of climbing, and most walkers are up and back inside 1.5 to 2 hours.

The summit is a rounded rock dome scraped smooth by a glacier, with a 360-degree view over Lake Wānaka, the Clutha River, the Cardrona Valley, and the peaks running north toward Mount Aspiring. A good first afternoon — enough to stretch the legs after the drive without giving up the day.

Wānaka Hiking & Leisure

Days 04–05 of 09

Breakfast comes first, then the question of how far your legs want to carry you on these days.

Mount Aspiring National Park holds trails ranging from a few easy hours to a full-day ridge climb above Lake Wānaka — the choice is yours, and the mountains will meet you wherever you set the bar.

Scheduled TimeFlexible

The Rob Roy Glacier Track

Adventure
The Rob Roy Glacier Track

An easy-to-moderate 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) out-and-back in Mount Aspiring National Park, widely rated one of the best day walks in the country. Allow 3 to 4 hours.

The trail crosses a swing bridge and climbs through beech forest into an alpine amphitheater of sheer walls, waterfalls coming off them, and a hanging glacier at the head of the valley. The trailhead at Raspberry Creek sits at the end of the Matukituki Valley road, part of it unsealed and forded in places, which wants a high-clearance vehicle after rain.

Diamond Lake & Rocky Mountain Track

Adventure
Diamond Lake & Rocky Mountain Track

A stacked walk on Mount Aspiring Road, about 20 minutes from town, where you choose your own turnaround. The short version circles Diamond Lake in under an hour. Carry on and the track climbs to a lake viewpoint, then to the Rocky Mountain summit at 775 meters — roughly 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) return with 480 meters of ascent, 2.5 to 3 hours.

The top looks out over Lake Wānaka and Glendhu Bay with the Southern Alps behind. The descent can be looped back a different way rather than retraced.

Roys Peak

Adventure
Roys Peak

The big one. A 16-kilometer (10-mile) return climb of 5 to 7 hours, steady and non-technical the whole way but relentless in gradient. A good level of fitness required.

The payoff is the ridgeline viewpoint over Lake Wānaka and the mountains behind it, among the most photographed spots in the country. One of the most popular hikes in the region, so expect company, particularly around sunrise.

Remarkables Country & the Wakatipu Shore

Kamana Lakehouse perched above Lake Wakatipu, with ridge walks to Ben Lomond's exposed summit and quieter trails winding through the beech forest of Mt Crichton.

Transfer to Queenstown

Day 06 of 09
The road from Wanaka delivers you, in time, to the lake's edge — a different body of water, a different register of energy. Queenstown announces itself before you arrive: the mountains closer-seeming, the town below them kinetic even at a distance. Your base for the next three nights sits a few minutes outside that current, which is exactly the point.

Queenstown

Days 07–08 of 09

Queenstown rewards the walker who actually walks it. Breakfast, then boots — these days belong to the trails, the ridgelines, and the long views over Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables that keep opening as you climb.

Ben Lomond Track

Adventure
Ben Lomond Track

A moderate 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) return trek to the saddle, 2.5 to 4 hours for most walkers.

Riding the Skyline Gondola up Bob's Peak skips the brutal forest climb beneath it, cutting about 450 meters of ascent and roughly two hours of walking. The saddle is the usual turnaround; the summit proper is another steep push above it for anyone still keen.

Queenstown Hill

Adventure
Queenstown Hill

A moderate 5-to-6-kilometer loop of 2 to 3 hours, starting close enough to the town center to walk to from breakfast.

The track climbs through pine forest past a run of historical information panels to the "Basket of Dreams" sculpture, with Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables laid out below.

Mt Crichton Loop Track

Adventure
Mt Crichton Loop Track

An easy-to-moderate 6.4-kilometer (4-mile) loop of 2 to 3 hours, fifteen minutes by road from Queenstown.

Native beech forest most of the way, shaded and quiet, threaded with relics of the 1860s gold rush including water races and an old miner's hut. The gentlest of the Queenstown walks, and the best of them on a hot afternoon.
