Breakfast on a working coffee estate outside Arusha, then the road south to the Makayuni junction, and from there fifteen miles and three hours on a bike into the Greater Tarangire ecosystem. You reach the park having felt the ground, which is a different arrival than being delivered to it. The bikes come back on the fourth day for the Great Rift Valley, past villages and the rivers running down from the Ngorongoro forests above. In between is a full day among Tarangire's elephants and its baobabs, which stop being remarkable somewhere around the second afternoon and start being simply the shape of the place. The fifth day walks to the Endoro waterfall and visits the Iraqw bomas before the road climbs to the rim.

Where this differs is the nights. Lemala Mpingo Ridge sits on a rocky ridge above Tarangire rather than in it. Lake Manyara Tree Lodge is ten tree houses raised into mahogany canopy. Entamanu is one of the very few camps positioned above the Ngorongoro caldera rather than tucked along its lip, open-fronted, which matters on a rim where the weather arrives as an event. Then the light aircraft drops you onto grass in the Serengeti, and Kichakani is a mobile camp that shifts between seasonal positions to stay near the migration rather than waiting for it to come past. The last two days carry nothing scheduled, which on the northern plains in this window is less a gap than a wager on the animals setting the agenda. Should the light be worth staying out for, or the herds move overnight, nothing on the page has to be rearranged.
