Arusha sits at the edge of everything that follows. After the long hours of travel, you settle into the lodge — the mountain air, the altitude register in the lungs — before spreading your kit across a table while practiced hands move through it item by item, making certain nothing has been left to chance.

Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge sits on the forested shore of Lake Duluti, a small volcanic crater lake just outside Arusha, Tanzania. Set on a historic colonial-era coffee estate, the property offers a genuinely quiet retreat — birdsong, lake reflections, and the occasional glimpse of Kilimanjaro on the horizon. What sets Ngare Sero apart is the crater lake itself: guests can canoe directly from the property's shore, a rare and unhurried experience that most Arusha-area lodges simply cannot offer.

Today you are met by your Guide and Climbs Manager for a comprehensive briefing and Gear Check. You will be asked to lay out your gear, so that our team can check it off the list and make sure you are prepared!

This eight day ascent to the "Roof of Africa" has you starting at Lemosho on the western side and traversing across the most spectacular parts of the mountain, including the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley, and up to the summit via Stella Point. The descent is via the Mweka route.

Day 2

The Lemosho Route is very scenic and affords one of the best ascent profiles of any route on the mountain, offering a complete Kilimanjaro experience with more acclimatization time, more culture, and more spectacular scenery. This itinerary ascends via Stella Point and not the Western Breach and is for this reason considered to be a safer route.

Many people list Kilimanjaro as a lifelong dream adventure. There are a variety of itineraries with different lengths, and multiple routes traversing across the most spectacular parts of the mountain. A guided high-altitude camping operation on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, this is expedition travel taken seriously — structured around multiple routes, calibrated to different fitness levels, and supported by a trained crew from base to summit. The VIP tier elevates the mountain experience considerably, with private walk-in tents and a dedicated mess tent replacing the usual spartan arrangements. What separates this from a standard Kilimanjaro operator is the attention to sleep quality at altitude — elevated camp cots, layered bedding rated to -18°C, and guides who train twice yearly including Red Cross certification.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 3

The forest gives way slowly. Podocarpus and juniper thin at the edges, and then the heath opens — wide, austere, the plateau arriving not as a destination but as a fact of the mountain. After a full day, camp.

Day 4
The Shira plateau opens without ceremony — a high, treeless expanse where the sky feels closer than it should. You'll cross most of it before the afternoon, the trail rising steadily toward Moir Camp as the mountain's upper ridges come into fuller view.
Lemosho Route - Day 3
Adventure

Today you will cross the Shira plateau, one of the most scenic parts of the trip. This morning you will hike for around 3-4 hours to the lunch point. After lunch you will ascend to Moir Camp, arriving in the mid-afternoon. For those with the energy a hike in the late afternoon is possible.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 5

The mountain's logic is its own: climb high, sleep low, let the body negotiate with altitude in its own time. Above Barranco the terrain opens into alpine desert, stark and windswept, where the vegetation has given up and the rock takes over entirely. Lunch eaten somewhere on that exposed ground, the summit cone visible above — this is the day the climb becomes serious.

Lemosho Route - Day 4
Adventure

Today is a walk-high sleep-low day. You ascend into alpine desert and for those that are feeling strong you can even head up to Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. Lunch is taken as a picnic lunch on route. This is a long day but keep in mind that the next time you head to this altitude is in two days time, making this a great acclimatization day!

Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 6
After the Barranco Wall, the mountain offers a brief concession — a shorter stage, a measured pace, altitude doing its quiet work. Karanga Camp arrives in the late afternoon, earned not by distance but by patience, which at this elevation is its own discipline.
Lemosho Route - Day 5
Adventure

You now have a relatively short day to Karanga Camp, after conquering the Barranco Wall. The selection of Karanga Camp is strategic – significant time at altitude is essential for safe acclimatization and in the late afternoon you will arrive in camp. Sunsets here are particularly spectacular, with views of the southern glacial valleys and ice fields towering 1,000 meters (over 3,000 feet) above you.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Day 7
The mountain has its own economy of effort: conserve what you have, spend nothing you don't need to. The ascent to Barafu is measured, deliberate, and brief by design — the afternoon hours in camp belong to stillness, to eating, to the long, quiet arithmetic of altitude.
Lemosho Route - Day 6

Today is another half-day ascending to Barafu Camp. Once again lunch is taken in camp allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Desolate alpine desert and at times strong winds rip over this camp, and yet in the evening splendid views of Mawenzi peak are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before heading to rest for the evening.

Mount Kilimanjaro - Summit Day!

Day 8
The mountain asks for everything in the dark hours before it gives anything back. You left camp before midnight, moving by headlamp through the cold and thin air, and by the time the horizon begins to pale, Uhuru Peak is within reach — earned foot by foot, in silence.
Lemosho Route - Day 7 - SUMMIT DAY!
Lemosho Route - Day 7 - SUMMIT DAY!

Adventure

Most people depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence is the name of the game to reach the summit and by dawn, as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near the rim. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru peak, the Roof of Africa! What goes up must come down and your goal today is to reach Mweka camp before dusk.
