Riad Kheirredine is a boutique riad in the Marrakech Medina, a short walk from Jemaa el-Fnaa. Courtyards, a large heated pool and rooftop terraces with sunset views over the Medina give the house a calm, secluded feel, with meals served wherever guests choose to settle. The spa is the draw: private hammam cabins, massage rooms and a heated indoor pool, which the riad describes as one of the largest spas within a Medina riad.

Refuge du Toubkal, also known as Refuge Louis Neltner, is a mountain hut at 3,207 m in the heart of Toubkal National Park. Run by the Casablanca section of the French Alpine Club, it sits at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, with communal dormitories for up to about 120. Dating to 1938 and named for the geologist who mapped the Moroccan massif, it is the working base for the Toubkal summit, with a restaurant serving tagine lunch.

Route via Aremd (1,900m) and Sidi Chamharouch (2,310m), then gradual ascent through alpine terrain to Refuge du Toubkal.

Trek time: 5–6 hours.
Distance: ~11 km.
Elevation gain: +1,460m.
Route: Imlil (1,740m) → Aremd (1,900m) → shrine of Sidi Chamharouch (2,310m) → Refuge du Toubkal (3,206m).
Terrain: Mule paths, steady incline, rocky moraine above 2,500m.

Situated in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains in Morocco at 3,207m, the Toubkal Refuge is the perfect basecamp for anyone looking to climb Mount Toubkal. At 4,167m, Mount Toubkal is the highest mountain in the High Atlas Mountains and North Africa, so this, combined with the fact it’s not a technical climb, puts it squarely on many people’s bucket lists. Actually the phrase ‘Toubkal Refuge’ is a bit misleading as there are two refuges to choose from; the French-owned Refuge du Toubkal and the Moroccan-owned Gite Camping les Mouflons.

Which one’s best?

There's not a lot to choose between them, and guides will generally choose whichever refuge has the best conditions or is less crowded. The refuges are right next to each other, at the foot of Mount Toubkal. They both have the same stunning setting and form a sort of ‘base camp’ for climbers and adventurers heading to Toubkal. They also make a good base for day treks around the Toubkal Massif and the High Atlas Mountains.

Pre-dawn climb from Refuge via South Cirque to summit Jebel Toubkal (4,167m). Enjoy 360° panoramic views before descending to Refuge, then continue to Imlil.

Vertical gain: +960m ascent / -2,420m descent.
