Exploring Vancouver Island

What follows is two halves that argue with each other, in the right order. The first is Clayoquot Sound, reached by floatplane out of Vancouver because nothing else reaches it, and three nights at a lodge on the Bedwell River. The days there are made rather than chosen: a glacial plunge into the river before breakfast, the Penny Falls trail with ropes on the steep pitches and a pool at the top, a helicopter onto an alpine summit for drinks above the Sound. The next day runs a marine safari along the shoreline for black bears, seals and whales, then an e-bike to the mouth of the canyon and a paddle up the glacier-fed Bedwell that ends by jumping into the whitewater. The hot tub on the far side of the Outpost, with river otters in the estuary below, is where the arithmetic of all that gets settled.

Then the ferry to Tofino, and the argument. Long Beach Lodge sits on Cox Bay with the Pacific outside the glass and a road behind it, and the last three days are a menu rather than a plan: surf lessons off the beach, a boat to the hot springs ninety minutes north, kayaking into Lemmens Inlet under the old growth of Meares Island, whale watching, e-bikes on the forest paths, or the Cox Bay lookout for the view that explains the geography. Nothing is scheduled and nothing needs to be. The first half proves you can be somewhere unreachable; the second proves you do not have to be.
