What follows turns on a fact that sounds like a detail and isn't: neither lodge has a road to it. You arrive by floatplane, leave the same way, and the water in between is the only route there has ever been. One night in Vancouver first, thirty minutes from the airport on Coal Harbour, long enough to sleep and not long enough to settle. Then the seaplane out to Clayoquot Sound and three nights on the Bedwell River. The days there are built rather than left open: a glacial plunge into the river before breakfast, the Penny Falls trail with ropes on the steep sections and a pool at the top, a helicopter onto the summit of Ursus Mountain for drinks above the Sound. The next day asks more. A marine safari along the coastline for black bears, seals and whales, orcas if the Sound is willing, then an e-bike to the mouth of the canyon and a paddle up the glacier-fed Bedwell that ends by jumping into the whitewater. The spa afterward is less an indulgence than a correction.

Then it changes register. A last morning among the canoes and paddleboards, a horse-drawn carriage down to the seaplane dock, and a flight north to Nimmo Bay in the Great Bear Rainforest. The two days there are deliberately unscheduled: boat, kayak, paddleboard, helicopter, or your own feet, at whatever pace the place sets. It is the same coast and the opposite proposition, and it works because the first half earned it. On the eighth morning the floatplane lifts off the water, the rainforest closes back over itself, and the coast goes on keeping no record of anyone having been there.
